I approach each canvas as a journey, as an adventure. The painting process is unplanned.  Starting with some harmonious colors I trowel and sponge, scrape and brush until a coherent theme emerges. Ideas are pursued, often to quick effect, sometimes to be covered over completely as the picture changes direction. The finish can come suddenly, or take months,  as did #24.

I try to capture the eye and have it linger on the different neighborhoods of the painting. Texture, color, and movement combine to offer interest to the viewer.  Balance is a constant consideration, as is unity, especially in the final detail.

Caspar #22

I work the paint, trying to keep colors separate but mixed, balanced but weighted.  I look for the pleasant surprises when interest emerges—does this effect fascinate? Can it be repeated elsewhere? A good session painting means achieving novelty more by chance than deliberation. Serendipitous discovery.

Caspar #15 - Early Snow

Some paintings are all action.  Some call out for more— more color, more motion, more weight.  This requires returning again and again over weeks or months.

Caspar #18

The canvas is built up with layer after layer of different color.  Scraping, slathering, removing paint in rows to reveal what lies beneath, adding strong accents when nearing completion. Each canvas emerges in its own time, evolves into itself as a maturation, not a construction.

Caspar #21

The painting emerges as a symbiosis of happenstance and inspiration.

I hope you enjoy the gallery.
